MOUNT VERNON, Va. — Festivities were underway in Mount Vernon on Saturday in celebration of Presidents Day and in observance George Washington’s 285th birthday.
Guests kicked off the three day weekend at the Mount Vernon estate where they tasted Washington’s favorite breakfast food, hoecakes, which are made with cornmeal.
But 13-year-old Luke Cotnoir, who was on a class trip visiting from Michigan, did not share the same affinity for hoecakes as Washington. He grimaced as he tasted them. “The texture was kind of weird, and I’m not used to pancakes like that,” said Cotnoir.
Washington liked to mark his birthday with a quiet day, but on Saturday, Washington (portrayed by an actor) was surrounded by fans wanting to take selfies and pictures with the six-foot plus general.
The Presidents Day weekend celebrations at Mount Vernon this weekend include character performances, dancing demonstrations, arts and crafts and more. On Monday, admission is free, as well as on Wednesday, Feb. 22, Washington’s actual birthday.
