Man dies after canoe overturns in Va. river

PULASKI, Va. (AP) — A man has died after a canoeing accident in the New River.

Pulaski Sheriff’s Office Lt. Daniel Johnson tells local media that a husband and wife were canoeing Sunday afternoon on the New River when the canoe tipped. The wife called 911 when her husband didn’t resurface.

Johnson says the man’s body was recovered shortly after 6 p.m. a short distance from the area he went missing near the Pepper’s Ferry Bridge. His identity has not been released.

Investigators don’t believe the accident was weather related.

Johnson says the woman wasn’t injured.

Several agencies assisted with the recovery, including Pulaski County Special Operations Team, New River Valley Swift Water Rescue and Recovery Association, Fairlawn Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. and Regional Medical Emergency Services Inc.
