RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring is fighting a lawsuit by a delegate to the Republican National Convention who wants to avoid voting for presumptive nominee Donald Trump at the party convention later this month.
Herring, a Democrat, filed a brief in a federal lawsuit Friday opposing delegate Carroll Correll Jr.’s bid to unbind Virginia’s delegates from having to vote according to the results of the March 1 primary, which Trump won.
Correll sued Herring and other Virginia officials last week, saying that being forced to vote for Trump at the convention would violate his constitutional rights.
Herring said Correll knew what the rules were for delegates when he applied to be one and shouldn’t be allowed to invalidate the results of the primary. A hearing is set for Thursday.
