WASHINGTON — Virginia Rail Express says it needs to raise fares 4 percent to cover revenue reductions and increasing costs.
The increase in fare would help cover expenses for the expected increase in ridership with the new Spotsylvania station and to pay for the increasing price to use rail owned by Amtrak and other train companies.
The proposed fare increase would also fund another Fredericksburg Line train starting in July.
A monthly pass from Woodbridge to D.C., for example, would go up $10 to $242. A pass from Manassas to D.C. would increase $10 as well to $260, all starting in July.
