Chicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot wants her former colleagues at the U.S attorney’s office to re-examine the acquittals of three police officers accused of covering up the police shooting of Laquan McDonald.
The white Chicago police officer who gunned down Laquan McDonald in 2014 was sentenced Friday to nearly seven years in prison, bringing an end to a historic case that centered on a shocking dashcam video and fueled the national debate over race and law enforcement.
“This verdict provides validation and a sense of justice for many residents of Chicago and Cook County and beyond this area … the African-American communities across our country,” special prosecutor Joseph McMahon said after the verdict was read.
