Defending champion: Brian Harman.

Last year: Harman captured his first major by building a five-shot lead at Royal Liverpool and closing with a 1-under 70 for a six-shot victory. Harman never trailed over his final 51 holes. At age 36, he became the oldest first-time major winner since Sergio Garcia was 37 when he won the Masters.

Last time at Royal Troon: Henrik Stenson set the major championship record at 264 and needed just about every shot to win an epic duel against Phil Mickelson. Stenson joined Johnny Miller as the only players to shoot 63 in the final round to win a major. He beat Mickelson by three shots. No one else was closer than 11.

British Open champions at Royal Troon: Henrik Stenson (2016), Todd Hamilton (2004), Justin Leonard (1997), Mark Calcavecchia (1989), Tom Watson (1982), Tom Weiskopf (1973), Arnold Palmer (1962), Bobby Locke (1950), Arthur Havers (1923).

Major champions in 2024: Scottie Scheffler (Masters), Xander Schauffele (PGA Championship), Bryson DeChambeau (U.S. Open).

Tiger tales: Tiger Woods is playing in all four majors for the first time since 2019.

No slam: The British Open currently is the only major where no one can complete the career Grand Slam.

Key statistic: Six different Americans have won the last six majors, the longest such streak in 47 years.

Worth noting: Ludvig Aberg, Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay are the only players in the top 10 in the world ranking who have not won a major.

Worth quoting: “We only get four tries in a year. And the once it’s done, we’ve got to wait again until next year. I’m still not fully used to the Open being the final major of the year.” — Justin Thomas.
