WASHINGTON — We usually give at least three games from which to choose for our DMV Game of the Week. But there are two pairs of powerhouses matched up in huge rivalry games this weekend, and it didn’t make sense to try to force a third option when both ought to be barnburners.
On Friday night, Broad Run (9-0, 6-0) will visit old rivals Stone Bridge (9-0, 6-0) in a battle for Potomac supremacy. The Spartans are unblemished, but had to hang on to survive a 16-14 test against Briar Woods last week. They took down the Bulldogs 10-7 in a regular season home win, but Stone Bridge got revenge with a 28-7 playoff win en route to the Virginia 5A championship game. The Bulldogs survived their toughest test, a 14-13 road win at Tuscarora two weeks ago, and have blown out every team that’s come to campus this fall. This game should live up to the billing.
And on Saturday, WCAC rivals will meet with the conference title on the line, as St. John’s (6-2, 4-0) and Gonzaga (7-2, 3-1) duke it out at Paint Branch High School. If the Cadets can complete the perfect conference slate, they’ll win it outright. If Gonzaga can win, the athletic directors from the three top schools (including Good Counsel) will literally draw seeds out of a hat for the playoffs. The Eagles came from behind to stun St. John’s 45-35 last year in the regular season, only to meet the next week in the WCAC playoffs, where the Cadets got their revenge with a 38-21 win.
Let us know which game you’d like us to cover by voting in the poll below by 11:59 p.m. Thursday and we’ll be live on the scene with photos, videos and updates this weekend.
UPDATE: After a back-and-forth battle, we’re headed to Loudoun County Friday night to see Broad Run take on Stone Bridge. See you at the game!
