WASHINGTON — The Toronto Blue Jays face elimination in its American League Division Series against the Texas Rangers, but the postseason could already done for University of Maryland alum Brett Cecil.
According to Blue Jays manager John Gibbons, Cecil suffered “a pretty significant tear” in his left calf after pitching in the eighth inning Friday in Game 2 against Texas.
The Rangers won 6-4 in 14 innings to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Cecil is not expected to return this season.
The 29-year-old was Toronto’s second-round pick in the 2007 MLB Draft and is the longest tenured pitcher on the Blue Jays’ staff.
The left-hander was a key cog in the Toronto bullpen this season, as the Blue Jays ended a 22-year playoff drought.
Including the postseason, Cecil had not allowed an earned run in his last 39 appearances dating to June 24.
Cecil graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, before spending two years with the Maryland Terrapins.
