Three teenagers accused of trying to kill someone on a school bus in Prince George’s County, Maryland, last month were indicted Tuesday, each facing 16 counts including attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment.
Two of the suspects are 14-years-old, and the other is 15.
“All of these teenagers have been indicted as adults,” said Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy.
The 15-year-old, known as “Baby K,” is accused of pulling out a gun on the school bus in the Oxon Hill area. He allegedly attempted to shoot another teenager multiple times, but investigators said the gun malfunctioned.
According to prosecutors, “Baby K” and the group he was with then beat the victim and left the scene. The victim was left with minor injuries.
Two adults who were on or near the bus at the time, a bus driver and a bus aide, feared for their lives, prosecutors said.
“It’s unacceptable,” said Braveboy. “Our job is to ensure that young people can go to school without the fear of someone pointing a gun at them.”
A fourth suspect in the case, a 14-year-old girl, was not indicted Tuesday, but she does face “conspiracy” charges in the case, accused of helping plan the attack.
Investigators believe the suspects and the victim all knew each other, and that the assault stemmed from a dispute.
Ammunition was recovered from the bus, investigators said.
“One of the three assailants, they had a gun on them, and they fired the gun three times but for some reason, by the grace of God, the gun did not fire,” said Martin Diggs, president of ACE-AFSCME Local 2250, which represents school support staff, including bus drivers.
Federal law enforcement arrested “Baby K” late last month.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Service’s fugitive task force said they tracked the 15-year-old to Baltimore Avenue in the Riverdale Park area and took him into custody.
