Md. corrections officer indicted in inmate assault case

WASHINGTON — A Prince George’s County Department of Corrections officer was indicted for assaulting an inmate last month.

A grand jury handed up an indictment for Department of Corrections Officer Lucky Oligie after surveillance video captured him hitting an inmate on Dec. 15, 2017. In addition to the second-degree assault charge, Oligie was indicted on two counts of misconduct in office, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks announced Thursday.

The surveillance video captured Oligie hitting the inmate, knocking him to the ground and then continuing to assault him. The inmate was being processed into the jail at the time, Alsobrooks said.

After the incident, the Department of Corrections began an internal review and Oligie was placed on administrative leave. He has been suspended from his duties at the Department of Corrections.

Department of Corrections Director Mary Lou McDonough said any use of force by its officers is examined, and if it is deemed to be excessive force, the case is turned over to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

Alsobrooks said in a news release that Oligie’s actions were “completely unnecessary” and that the indictment will provide the opportunity to “hold him accountable for what he has done.”

A summons has been issued for Oligie to appear in court. The date for his initial appearance is pending.
