WASHINGTON — Police have video of the Tastee Diner robbery in Laurel, Maryland, that preceded a carjacking and multiple wrecks that closed the Baltimore Washington Parkway for hours on Tuesday.
“Our detectives have had a chance to look at it and they were pleased to find that the robbery was captured on surveillance video. We’re not releasing that tape at this moment, but it could be a critical piece of evidence,” said Audrey Barnes, City of Laurel communications director.
Detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and are following other leads in the 12:45 a.m. robbery, Barnes said.
A vehicle that was stolen during the robbers’ getaway was recovered Tuesday morning in Northeast D.C., but the search continues for the three suspects who were wearing masks and dark clothes.
Diner employees described a harrowing event to WTOP’s Nick Iannelli.
The restaurant’s cashier said the robbers threw him to the floor and threatened his life.
“He took the butt of the gun and laid it across my head. He said he was going to kill me,” Joe Fredholm, 74, said.
The robbers got away with about $140.
U.S. Park Police are investigating the carjacking and the series of wrecks on the Baltimore Washington Parkway near Laurel that are being attributed to the robbers. Witnesses are asked to share information by calling police at 202-610-7500.
