Pr. George’s Co. attorney urges victims, loved ones to report domestic violence

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – The death of a 3-month-old baby, allegedly at the hands of his father, is reigniting a discussion on domestic violence in Prince George’s County.

“We really cannot continue to suffer the loses we’ve suffered,” said Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks.

Alsobrooks was reacting to the death of Antoine Petty, Jr. who investigators believe was killed by his father, Antoine Petty, Sr., 34, who was upset by the child’s crying. The boy’s mother is also charged in his death as an accessory to the crime, since investigators believe she tried to help cover up the child’s death.

The baby becomes the 13th child, under the age of 3, to die as a result of domestic violence in the county, in two years.

In court, the mother of Geneice Petty, 24, urged the judge to release her daughter ahead of any trial, because she said Petty was a victim of domestic violence.

While the prosecutor didn’t substantiate the claim, after the hearing, Alsobrooks spoke about the importance of getting help to victims of domestic violence.

Alsobrooks said the county has 19 agencies which are ready to help anyone who is trying to figure a way out of a violent relationship.

“Do not assume that violence will not extend itself, not only to you, but to your children,” Alsobrooks said.

For many victims, fear keeps them from leaving an abusive relationship but the county can provide help with developing a plan to help someone leave a dangerous relationship.

Alsobrooks said that while it is a troubling number, an increase in protective orders in the county shows that more victims are seeking help.

In 2015, the year ended with more than 9,000 orders being issued. So far this year, there have been 7,200 orders and that number is expected to surpass 11,000 by year’s end.

Alsobrooks also urged friends and family members to take action if they know someone in trouble. Family members can call agencies, such as the county’s Family Crisis Center, if they suspect a loved one is a victim of domestic violence.

“It is our greater hope that we don’t stand out here anymore and talk about babies and defenseless children that are killed in this community,” Alsobrooks said.

At the conclusion of the bond hearing, Antoine Petty, Sr., who is charged with murder, was ordered to remain behind bars without bond. A judge set bond for Geneice Petty at $120,000.
