DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. — Two men died after two early-morning shootings, and Prince George’s County police say it was not a random crime.
District Heights police chief Elliott Gibson says officers were called to respond to the sound of gunshots at 4:20 a.m. in the 6400 block of Gateway Boulevard. When they got there, they found a vehicle crashed into a tree with a man who had been shot to death inside. Police identified the man as Samuel Paige, a 27-year-old Suitland residents.
A man who had been a passenger in that vehicle — identified as Kevin Muse, a 26-year-old of District Heights — was later found dead one block from the crash, in the 6500 block of Halleck Street. Gibson said Muse also had been shot.
“We believe the two shooting incidents are connected,” Gibson said.
Police haven’t said how they know the second victim was initially in the car.
Police say after a preliminary investigation, detectives say they do not believe it was a random shooting.
Gibson said it appears the two victims were targeted, and that robbery was the motive. Asked how robbery could be the motive, given the car crash and two separate shootings, Gibson said the investigation is continuing.
Gibson declined to name or describe suspects, although Prince George’s County police said earlier they believed they knew who was responsible.
A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case. Anyone with information can call police at 301-772-4925.
