Suspect identified in District Heights homicide

WASHINGTON– Prince George’s County police are actively searching for the suspect in the Oct. 3 murder of a 32-year-old woman in District Heights, Maryland.

The suspect has been identified as 29-year-old Joseph Poteat of District Heights, Md. The victim, 32-year-old Marquita Wimms, was found inside a car that had crashed into an apartment building on Rochelle Avenue on Oct. 3. She appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound, leading police to declare the crash site a crime scene.

Wimms was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. Poteat is charged with first- and second-degree murder, among other charges. Police are working to establish a motive in the case.
