Chalupa, January 2014
Chalupa, a sweet cocker spaniel mix, was the first WTOP Pet of the Week of 2014. It’s no surprise that this 7-year-old pup who loves people was quickly adopted from the Washington Animal Rescue League.

Terry Boot and Susan Bones, January 2014
Terry Boot and Susan Bones came into the studio together on Jan. 20, 2014. These two 7-year-olds were reluctantly relinquished to the Washington Animal Rescue League when family health issues made it impossible for their owner to give them the attention they deserve. But they were adopted out together and the ‘gentle giants’ are headed into 2015 with their new family.

Poinsettia, January 2014
Poinsettia came to the Washington Animal Rescue League last December after being rescued from the streets of Baltimore and was “skin and bones.” The shelter quickly nursed her back to health, and after her WTOP debut, she was adopted by a WARL volunteer.

Seahawk, February 2014
This little pup was 12-weeks old when he went on-air in the Glass-Enclosed Nerve Center. The border collie mix was named after the Seahawks’ 2014 Super Bowl victory, and soon after his radio debut, he had a victory of his own: getting a new family.

Easy Peasy, February 2014
Easy Peasy walked into the Glass-Enclosed Nerve Center last February with the most beautiful — and unusual — dilute brindle coat. She was originally adopted before Christmas but later returned because her adopter didn’t realize the time commitment involved in exercising the body and mind of a young, strong, energetic dog. But her first adopter’s loss was another’s gain. She is now living with her new family.

Smushie, February 2014
Smushie was a bit sad when we first met her. The 7-year-old purebred Pekingese arrived at the Washington Animal Rescue League from South Carolina with his best friend — but his best friend was quickly adopted. Smushie was inconsolable. But soon after his mid-February WTOP debut, he was much happier … because he was adopted.

Figaro, February 2014
This 9-week-old puppy arrived to D.C. from down South with several litter mates, who Washington Animal Rescue League veterinary staff quickly discovered had been exposed to parvovirus, a contagious and potentially deadly viral infection. All of the pit bull-mix puppies were quarantined, and thankfully, none of them got sick. And Figaro’s life got much better — he was adopted by a loving family.

Belka, April 2014
Just after the 2014 Winter Olympics, the Washington Animal Rescue League said “privyet” (pree-vyet) — that’s “hi” in Russian — to Belka, a 3-year-old stray dog rescued from Sochi. Now, Belka has a permanent home of her own in the United States.

Bud, April 2014
Before Bud came to WTOP, the 3.5-month-old puppy spent the majority of his time spent entertaining viewers of Animal Planet’s Puppy Cam (which is broadcast from the shelter’s puppy room). And while Bud was one of the last of the puppies to be adopted from the room, he eventually found his forever home.

The best description Washington Animal Rescue had for Coupe when he came to WTOP this summer was “handsome hunk.” “Seriously, this 1.5-year-old Great Pyrenees mix is stunning,” his bio said. Maple Syrup, December 2014
What better way to end a great year than with a sweet dog like Maple Syrup?
This 2-year-old beagle is as sweet as his name. He’s friendly and social and loves having his velvety ears stroked and his rump scratched. In return, he’ll give lots of doggy kisses.
Like most beagles and other hounds, Maple Syrup is ruled by his nose and enjoys taking walks on which he can sniff all the amazing smells around him. He gets very excited and vocal when he sees other dogs, but calms down if he’s allowed to approach and greet them.
If you’re looking for a happy, loyal, medium-sized canine companion, stop by the Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Maple Syrup.
