The question has come up more than once in recent weeks as we’ve compiled our Diversity in Business Awards honorees:
“You’re doing that this year?”
The answer, dear readers, is an emphatic yes. We started the program — initially called Minority Business Leaders Awards — in 2008. That was well before President Donald Trump took office the first time and years before his latest assault on diversity, equity and inclusion. We hope to be doing it long after he leaves office.
For the Washington Business Journal, diversity isn’t a bad word. It’s a core value. We think it improves companies and organizations.
When we launched this program, our mission was clear: to shine a journalistic spotlight on those making a difference in a business world where leadership didn’t always reflect the community it served. We modeled it after our Women Who Mean Business program, which had the same goal to shine a spotlight on women leaders in Greater Washington business.
