Viewpoint: Four reasons Congress should withdraw the Bowser Act

The Greater Washington Board of Trade, a regional nonpartisan business organization founded in 1889, has long championed policies that strengthen our economy, create jobs and enhance the region’s appeal for residents and businesses alike. Central to this vision is a stable, self-governing Washington, D.C.

Yet, Congress is once again threatening the District’s autonomy with the Bowser Act — a misguided proposal to expand federal oversight of local governance. This unwarranted interference undermines business confidence, disrupts economic progress, and contradicts national efforts to empower local governments. Instead of seeking to control D.C., Congress should work with D.C. and support its continued success, much as it did with granting D.C. control over the RFK Stadium site. Here’s why:
