The current level of crime in the District of Columbia is unacceptable and it’s affecting surrounding areas. The strength of our entire region depends on reducing crime and supporting a thriving business community. That’s why the safety and well-being of our communities, businesses, workers, visitors and residents must be a top priority, especially for the mayor, D.C. Council, Metropolitan Police Department, the attorney general and U.S. Attorney’s Office.
We at the Greater Washington Board of Trade agree that a comprehensive approach is required to solve this complex issue in the short- and long-term. This means addressing both the core structures that lead to crime and more immediate actions to hold offenders accountable.
Some positive steps are underway. For example, Councilmember Brooke Pinto’s emergency crime legislation was passed and extended last year. WMATA is installing gates to prevent fare jumping and increasing security at stations. The Justice Department is providing…
