A look at seven Metro properties with more than 5 million square feet of development potential

Metro isn’t just a major transit system. It’s also a major property owner. And several of those properties have a lot of potential for mixed-use projects.

Last spring, Metro authorized solicitations for joint development at seven of its stations, representing the capacity to support about 5.2 million square feet of new development, including something like 3,500 housing units. Those properties include the stations at Brookland, Congress Heights, Deanwood, Capitol Heights, North Bethesda, Fort Totten and a lot next to a Metro office building very near the Eisenhower Avenue station. Public hearings on facility changes necessary to enable new development have been held for the first three — Brookland, Congress Heights and Deanwood.
