Viewpoint: Justice housing for low-income levels takes more partnerships

Editor’s note: This comment is in response to an April 25 news story by staff reporter Dan Brendel that showed that the biggest gaps in regional housing production were in the lowest-income tranches. Washington Business Journal Publisher Alex Orfinger is board chair emeritus for Jubilee Housing.

Yes, Dan Brendel. You are right — we have produced far too little housing for those on the lowest end of the income spectrum. Your story based on a report from the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers should be a call to action for our region.

We need to do more — and in high-opportunity neighborhoods and with innovative approaches to financing and to social services that support family life goals.

It’s about promoting justice and prosperity through housing. Justice housing means not only high-quality, deeply affordable housing, but easy access to quality education, grocery, retail and transportation options as well. It means on-site amenities, such as early childhood education…
