Viewpoint: The case for an FBI headquarters in Northern Virginia’s Springfield

As Virginia and Maryland officials make their final pitches to be the home of the next FBI headquarters, Springfield is the clear choice. While Maryland has made an excellent case for how the state would benefit from an FBI relocation, Virginia stands alone in its capacity to bring transformational change to the FBI.

To be sure, Virginia offers practical advantages that would please FBI employees and should make us all happy as taxpayers, like land already owned by the GSA, nearer to many current FBI employee homes, located in a diverse and affordable community, featuring best-in-class transit offerings and operating much closer to its training academy in Quantico. 

But of all the advantages Maryland cannot replicate, Virginia’s intellectual infrastructure and our ability to help improve the FBI’s own diversity and inclusivity stand out the most starkly. Yes, Maryland would be greatly helped with the new FBI headquarters, and much attention is being placed on the building itself.…
