Donald Graham, the longtime executive of Graham Holdings Co. (NYSE: GHC) — formerly The Washington Post Co. — is stepping down from his role as chairman of the Arlington company.
Graham will become chairman emeritus starting in May, the company announced. The 77-year-old spent 30 years as chairman of the board, was CEO from 1991 until 2015 and for more than 20 years was publisher of The Washington Post — which Graham’s grandfather, Eugene Meyer, purchased in 1933 and the family’s holding company retained until the newspaper’s sale to Jeff Bezos in 2013.
Current board member Anne Mulcahy will become board chair in May.
“In most companies, I think a new chair of the board every 30 years or so is a good idea,” Graham said in a statement.
