Viewpoint: The future isn’t certain. It’s time to embrace the present.

As 2022 comes to an end, we want to take stock of the year and offer thanks and gratitude for those around us. This year, however, I have so much to be thankful for, as was made clear to me in ways I never expected. Indulge me, please, as I share how recent events showed me how deeply that gratitude is felt and how widely my thanks extends.

In mid-November, my husband, Cal Bowie, found himself in the intensive care unit with brain trauma and broken ribs after a horseback-riding accident. I am pretty sure he’s going to be fine, but those weeks of waiting, wondering if he would even be alive — those weeks changed my perspective in ways I am still discovering.

I start with thanks to Cal who reminded me about love, the fragility of our life and what’s important. The ups and downs of recovery require that we live in the moment, focus on what and who is right in front of us, and not get our heads lost in the unessential noise around us.
