The District’s Department of Transportation is proposing an expansion of its storage facility for D.C.’s streetcars.
The D.C. streetcar car barn training center is located at 2550 Benning Road NE, between the city’s Carver-Langston and Kingman Park neighborhoods. It’s where maintenance and other operations for the District’s streetcars are housed. The streetcar provides free trips each day along eight stops between Union Station to Oklahoma Avenue, running along H Street NE and Benning Road.
D.C. plans to grow its fleet of streetcars for the first time since they returned to the District in 2016, with a proposed expansion of service to five new stops, extending out to the Benning Road Metro station. The Benning Road Bridges and Transportation Improvements Project, which is expected to cost nearly $180 million including for some roadway improvements, would debut in January 2026.
