Viewpoint: Veterans are an oft-overlooked, but highly viable talent pool

I grew up in the shadows of heroes. Puerto Rico, where I was born, has a proud tradition of military service. My grandfather joined the Army to serve in World War I and my father followed in his footsteps to enlist in the Army. I chose to join the Navy, gravitating toward its Civil Engineering Corps (CEC). The CEC is responsible for building and managing the Navy’s shore facilities — from planning, design and acquisition to construction, operation and maintenance.

The Department of Defense and its affiliated services provide rigorous training and educational opportunities for its members. This begins when you join the military and continues until you retire. They also have strong core values such as duty, integrity, ethics, honor, courage and loyalty, as well as sacred commitments that servicemen and women adhere to: never leave anyone behind, care for one another, prioritize safety and build cohesive teams.
