What’s it like to be one of the D.C. area’s leading female execs? Here’s what they have to say.

Nearly two decades ago, the Washington Business Journal developed its signature Women Who Mean Business award program. Earlier this October, we welcomed 25 new women into our cadre of honorees that’s grown to nearly 500 since naming our first class in 2004.

The program has grown into one of our most popular and competitive over the years, consistently pulling in hundreds of nominations from leading executives from across the region. This year’s class of nonprofit and business leaders were selected from a field of more than 400 nominations.

So how do we do it? Very carefully, I always joke. With the help of a panel of independent judges, the newsroom carefully considers nominations for honorees that not only have a proven track record in business, but who are also leaders within the community as well. We look for women who used their platforms and power to implement change and social progress across the region with their time and talents.
