These D.C.-area public company CEOs receive the most in cash compensation

We love to show you the highest-paid executives and highest-paid CEOs every year, but if you’re familiar at all with how public company compensation works, you probably have one nagging question in the back of your mind: “But how much of that is actually in cash?” 

There are three main components going into executive cash compensation, which I’ll explain more below, but they’re the salary, bonus and nonequity incentive. We wanted to show you who among our region’s public company CEOs actually got the most cash in 2021. It’s not the same ranking as who got the most overall compensation. 

A very large amount of most executives’ compensation packages these days are in stock, not in cash. Take for example Kewsong Lee, the now-former CEO of The Carlyle Group Inc.
