Historic Clifton Farm outside Berryville sells for $7.5M at auction

Clifton Farm, a 411-acre estate straddling the Virginia-West Virginia line just north of Berryville, Virginia, sold at auction last week for $7.48 million.

The opening bid was around $4 million and more than 18 different parties cast bids at the Sept. 14 auction held on the Clarke County site.

Hall and Hall Auctions, the Eaton, Colorado-based auction house overseeing the sale, declined to reveal the winning bidder’s identity. Seller Brent Mercke purchased the property at auction in 2014 for $4.35 million.

The property has a deep history in the northern Shenandoah Valley. George Washington is said to have walked its fields, according to marketing materials. Washington’s cousin, Warner Washington Jr., lived in a pre-Revolutionary War house on the site. The current Georgian manor house at Clifton Farm was completed by David Allen Hume and his wife, Sarah, in 1834. President John Tyler is said to have visited the house in the mid-19th century, according to the auction brochure.
