The University of Maryland has launched a platform for its student-athletes to capitalize on endorsement opportunities.
The university said Monday it has created Maryland Marketplace, where all current student-athletes have received profiles and the opportunity to accept paid name, image and likeness, or NIL, offers for things like video shoutouts or event appearances.
The platform comes from Lincoln, Nebraska’s Opendorse Inc., which offers a content management system to support the burgeoning endorsement industry for college athletes. When offered an NIL deal, athletes receive a notification through the Opendorse app. They can choose to accept or decline an opportunity. Once an opportunity is completed, athlete receive compensation on their accounts and can automatically disclose their activities to the school’s athletics department — ensuring compliance with NCAA regulations.
