New Spanish language radio station debuts in D.C. area

A new Spanish-language radio station, launched by Costa Media and featuring a morning show hosted by well-known local radio personality Pedro Biaggi, has debuted in the D.C. area with big plans for growth.

Costa Media, which is based in Connecticut but with affiliates in Boston and D.C., purchased WFAX 100.7 FM/1220 AM for $800,000 from Newcomb Broadcasting Corp., a family-owned company that had previously run Christian programming from the Falls Church station since 1948. President Doris Newcomb, who led her eponymous company for decades, decided to retire this year, according to NRB, a D.C.-based association of Christian communicators.

Costa received licensing approval in early August from the Federal Communications Commission for its new station, dubbed La Pantera and set to play mostly regional Mexican and Spanish urban music and a smattering of English pop hits.
