Mike Cordero is bringing an old-school Italian restaurant to Ballston

Mike Cordero wants to make you a reservation you can’t refuse.

The Northern Virginia restaurateur behind Barley Mac, Don Tito and Taco Rock plans to open a classic Italian restaurant in Ballston designed to capture the sort of atmosphere as though Michael Corleone were dining at the next table with Virgil Sollozzo and police captain Mark McCluskey — but without the violent ending of that famous scene from “The Godfather.” 

Cordero’s restaurant group has signed a long-term lease for the former Next Day Blinds at 3865 Wilson Blvd. Joined by his sons Nick and Anthony, he’s planning to open Carbonara: Old School Italian & Wine Bar as soon as July 2023. The executive chef and owner of Cordero Hospitality sees the new venture as a return to roots planted four decades ago, having gotten his start in the culinary industry making meatballs at an Italian restaurant in New York when he was just 15.
