Greater Washington’s restaurant industry partied Sunday evening like it was 2019.
An estimated 2,500 people registered to attend the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington’s 2022 RAMMY awards, held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Many turned out dressed in black-tie and ballgowns they haven’t worn since before the coronavirus outbreak.
There were plenty of reminders that fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic continues to plague an industry still hobbled by challenges including a labor shortage and supply-chain issues. Even some of the award categories, such as “Splendid Holidays at Home,” spoke to the lingering public health crisis.
Still, speakers such as Kathy Hollinger, president and CEO of RAMW, reflected on how far the industry has rebounded since the depths of the pandemic. It’s come back from tough times before, Hollinger noted. In 2016, for example, the Michelin Guide came out with its D.C. edition, signaling the industry had bounced back from the Great Recession.…
