Airports authority eyes new and improved duty-free concessions at Dulles, Reagan

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority plans to revamp duty-free concessions at Dulles International Airport and Reagan National Airport, in anticipation of a surge in international travel.

During MWAA’s business administration committee meeting on Wednesday, board members approved a staff recommendation to solicit a firm to develop, build or renovate, operate and manage duty-free concession spaces totaling nearly 13,000 square feet at Dulles, with potential for an optional 200-square-foot space at National, as well. The request for proposals will be released in May, an MWAA official said.

Duty-free stores — retail outlets that offer tax-exempt items for travelers who will take them out of the country — generated more sales per square foot than any other kind of concessions at Dulles and Reagan in 2019, according to the staff report. Popular items include liquor and tobacco, which have high taxes outside of duty-free, and luxury cosmetics and fragrances.
