Catholic University eyes massive solar array, consistent with Pope’s message to fight global warming

Catholic University of America is weighing the construction of a massive solar array to its west campus to cut down on energy costs, public documents show.

The proposed 25-acre facility would sit on the university’s otherwise undeveloped west campus, 44 acres that Catholic purchased from the federal government in 2004, adjacent to its main campus in Brookland. The D.C. Zoning Commission in 2005 approved a variety of uses for the west campus, including a running track and outdoor performance areas, but those projects have not come to fruition and apparently are not in the school’s current plans.

D.C. Zoning Administrator Matthew Le Grant met with Allison Prince, a land-use attorney with Goulston & Storrs representing Catholic, in late July to discuss the project. Le Grant sent a letter to Prince on Sept. 30 summarizing their meeting and his findings, which was posted online.
