Greater Washington’s scientists recount the highs and lows of researching — and testing — Covid-19 vaccines

You already know that Greater Washington is home to some of the bioscience companies that helped create and manufacture Covid-19 vaccines. Gaithersburg’s Novavax Inc. (NASDAQ: NVAX) has its own promising vaccine candidate that is currently in Phase 3 trials, which so far have found more than 90% efficacy against the virus and has included testing against its variants. Sseveral other local companies are playing a role in manufacturing vaccines, including Vigene Biosciences, the recently acquired Rockville company working with Altimmune Inc. (NASDAQ: ALT) of Gaithersburg to make the latter’s vaccine; and Emergent BioSolutions Inc. (NASDAQ: EBS), which is working with Johnson & Johnson to produce its Covid vaccine — though that Gaithersburg company’s Covid vaccine manufacturing journey has been rocky.
