UMBC defeats top-seeded Virginia, 74-54, in first round of NCAA Tournament

WASHINGTON — UMBC upsets top-seeded Virginia, 74-54, in the first round of NCAA Tournament.

The Retrievers upset the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

UMBC is the first No. 16 seed to knock off a No. 1 seed in the tourney.

The University of Maryland-Baltimore County had a 16-point lead with about 12 minutes left in a first-round game against Virginia, the unanimous No. 1 team in the AP poll. They were tied at the half.
