Gwyneth Paltrow’s website Goop often doles out eyebrow-raising health advice — and its most recent promotion of a coffee enema is no exception to that trend.
The Oscar winner’s lifestyle site released ” The Beauty & Wellness Detox Guide,” pumping up a slew of its products like the Organic Pharmacy 10-Day Detox Supplement Kit ($169), Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum ($185) and something called an Implant O-Rama System At-Home Coffee Enema ($135). This guide is one of several in its ” The Detox Guides.”
Enemas are medical procedures where liquid or gas are injected in the colon via the rectum, often meant to encourage bowel movement, reports The Washington Post. The publication went on to point out that enemas for detoxification purposes have been controversial for about a century.
The National Cancer Institute, for instance, says “too many enemas of any kind can cause changes in normal blood chemistry, chemicals that occur naturally in the body and keep the muscles, heart, and other organs working properly.”
Also, per the National Institutes of Health, “There isn’t any convincing evidence that detox or cleansing programs actually remove toxins from your body or improve your health. Also, colon cleansing procedures or enemas “may have side effects, some of which can be serious.”
The coffee enema guide comes with a caveat that this procedure is “for those who know what they’re doing,” and links to a separate article on its site, ” The Nuts and Bolts of Colonics,” which answers questions like the difference between a colonic and enema. And under that article, Goop clarifies that “This article is not, nor is it intended to be, a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and should never be relied upon for specific medical advice.”
That said, the introduction to the overall guide doesn’t try to play down its products. “Here, everything your body needs to really go clean (i.e. all-star, everyday skincare essentials), along with some ideas for upping your detox game (metaphysical colonic, anyone?),” the text reads.
Paltrow’s site has been the subject of much controversy, including when it recommended sticking a jade egg in your vagina last year for better orgasms, vaginal muscle tone, energy and hormonal balance, among other benefits.
