A new international report on wealth worldwide found the number of millionaires in the United States has hit an all-time high.
Financial services company Credit Suisse recently released its annual report on the state of global wealth and found some 1.1 million new millionaires were created in the U.S. in 2017. The increase raises the total number of millionaires in the U.S. to about 15,356,000, according to Time. That’s roughly one in every 20 Americans.
But while the U.S. now boasts “by far the greatest number of millionaires” and Americans account for roughly 43 percent of the world’s total millionaires, the country trails in the report’s broader, global assessment of median wealth.
Credit Suisse notes that countries with lower levels of wealth inequality see higher median wealth per adult. As a result, Switzerland is the No. 1 country for median wealth, followed by Australia and Belgium, respectively. The U.S., which is known for its substantial gap between the rich and the poor, lands alongside Austria and Greece at No. 21 with a median wealth of $55,900.
