Facebook Inc. Wants You to Buy and Sell on Its New App Feature, ‘Marketplace’ (FB)

Facebook Inc. (ticker: FB) is continuing to bolster itself as a one-stop shop for all kinds of content — now pitting itself against Craigslist and eBay Inc. (EBAY) via a new feature in its mobile app: Marketplace.

The app opens with for-sale items nearby, and users have the ability to search within specific locations, categories and price ranges. If a user wants an item, they can send a direct message within the feature and make an offer. Then, the buyer and seller can determine what happens next, since Facebook will not help in the payment or delivery of Marketplace products.

Also, adding an item only takes a few steps: Photograph an item, list its information and price, set your location, pick a category and post.

As Business Insider notes, this is not Facebook‘s first foray into classified listings. It created a similar feature in 2007, though this renewed effort suggests the company has faith in the reinvigorated idea. What’s more: the Marketplace icon will appear in the Facebook app in lieu of the signature Messenger shortcut. This shortcut will move to the top left of the app.

Marketplace will be available to all over 18 years old in the U.S., U.K., Australia and New Zealand via the Facebook app for iPhone and Android in the coming days.

Facebook’s stock is up 22.85 percent on the year, and was little changed in afternoon trading. Business Insider pointed out eBay shares fell as much as 4.5 percent but were down just about 1 percent as of Monday afternoon.
