5 Underappreciated Grilling Fruits

Summer grilling season is upon us, and while vegetables and meats may be your go-to ingredients, there are many unassuming in-season fruit options that you can add to a meal or use as a standalone dish. Sure, pineapple, peaches and mango are fairly popular when it comes to grilling, but have you ever considered less obvious options such as strawberries, avocado and kiwi? Grilled fruits are a healthy, flavorful addition to any meal. Here are five under-appreciated summer grilling fruits, plus ways to use them:

Strawberries have extremely high antioxidant properties, which translate into serious immune-boosting and disease-fighting capabilities. The high potassium content of this early summer berry aids in the regulation of blood pressure and can decrease risk of stroke. Try grilling them whole and/or skewered like a kebab. They can also be wrapped in foil for a juicy outcome. Grilled strawberries make for a delicious ice cream topping, savory side dish when paired with cheese such as goat or feta, or even a salsa that pairs nicely with fish or chicken.

Cantaloupe is loaded with vitamin C and boasts anti-inflammatory properties as well. This firm melon loves the grill and holds up well to high heat. Serve grilled cantaloupe as a stand-alone side dish with a drizzle of balsamic syrup and fresh mint, or add it to a salad or sandwich for a surprising twist.

Avocado is a rich source of several B vitamins, as well as vitamin C. A healthy fat source, this fruit is also rich in fiber and antioxidants, which prevent oxidative damage to cells. Avocados are fun to grill, and the pit-hole makes the perfect vessel for dips and sauces. A popular use for grilled avocado is to serve it with a homemade salsa in the pit-hole, but creamy, grilled avocado is also great on sandwiches and in salads.

Fresh figs are in season starting in the middle of June and have a sweet flavor and unique texture. Figs pack a hefty dose of fiber as well as potassium, which can play a role in preventing heart disease and cancer. Their prebiotic fiber also helps support gastrointestinal health. Grilled figs pair perfectly with honey and balsamic as well as cheese varieties such as goat, mascarpone and blue. Add them to vegetable salads and grain salads, or serve them on the side of grilled meats like pork or chicken. Grilled figs can be served as a simple, summery dessert as well.

Kiwifruit is rich in fiber, vitamin C, potassium, vitamin E and antioxidants. Eating kiwifruit can help reduce the risk of both heart disease and cancer, and one serving of kiwifruit provides 240 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C, which translates into immune-boosting powers. Kiwi works well on kebabs with other fruits or quick-cooking fish and shellfish like shrimp. Grilled kiwi tastes great in salads or serves as a side dish with fish, chicken or even beef.
