WASHINGTON — If you’re unhappy at work, try making some suggestions to your boss before deciding to call it quits.
For instance, if you’re buried in email, let your manager know and ask for more time to answer them. And if you don’t feel valued, ask for more feedback about how you’re doing and what you can do better.
These are ideas from a MainStreet.com article aimed at helping bosses keep employees happy and productive.
Managers are urged to find out work activities that suit the strengths of individual employees.
When an employee does something really well, spell it out to him in detail, either in person or on the phone.
Another note for bosses: Personal connections are key. Exercise equipment maker Nautilus has more than 300 employees, but everyone knows everyone by his first name.
A Gallup poll conducted last month found that just 31.5 percent of American workers felt “engaged” in their jobs last year.
That’s not a lot, but it’s the largest percentage recorded since Gallup began asking the question in 2000.
