Children’s National chief Kurt Newman elected to national Children’s Hospital Association board

Children’s National Health System chief Dr. Kurt Newman will get another title to add to his resume on Jan 1: board member for the Alexandria-based Children’s Hospital Association.

The association was formed by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and the Child Health Corp. of America. It represents more than 220 children’s hospitals in the U.S.

Newman, the president and CEO for Children’s National in D.C., was chosen because of his leadership in advocating for collaborations with children’s hospitals across the nation, CHA officials said in a statement.

Earlier this year, Newman organized a national children’s mental health summit to bring health professionals from around the country together to discuss the availability of appropriate mental health resources for children and teens. The health system is currently pushing to create a childhood disease research center on the grounds of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center campus.

In 2013, Newman led Children’s National in creating the Pediatric Specialists of Virginia with Inova Health System to address a concern of a limited number of pediatric specialists in Northern Virginia. Under his leadership, Children’s also formed the Bear Institute, a joint effort with Cerner Corp. to conduct research to improve patient experience and quality of care.

“I’m looking forward to developing solutions to our shared challenges in pediatric health care and ultimately improving the health and well-being of children across the nation,” Newman said in a statement.
