WASHINGTON –Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton are making
a their first trip to the U.S. together in December and tourism advocates in
one
Virginia county want the prince to make his historic namesake one of the stops
on the itinerary.
Ann Marie Maher, president and CEO of “Discover
Prince William and Manassas,” says Prince William County had sent out
a letter to the British ambassador
asking if the royal couple would be interested in visiting the county during
their upcoming stay in D.C. They found out shortly later that Prince William
will visit the nation’s capital alone on December 8, while Kate, who is
pregnant with their second child, stays in New York City.
That’s okay, they will settle for just William, who is the son of
Prince Charles and the late Princess Di, and is second in line to the throne.
His grandmother Elizabeth II, is Queen of England.
Maher says this isn’t the first time Prince William County has made a pitch
for
the royal scion. “We actually did reach out back in 2004 for the
anniversary (275th) of the county. Unfortunately, Prince William was in
school (college) was not able to visit,” says Maher.
Virginia was originally a British colony, and when the county was formed in
1731, it
was
named after a very distant relative of Prince William,
Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. “He actually was the 7th great-
uncle to Prince William,” said Maher.
She says it’s a long shot to get Prince William for a pop-over, but if you
don’t ask, you don’t get. Also she says
they’d love to pursue a sister-county type of relationship with Great Britain.
No word yet on whether Prince William will get prince mania anytime soon.
