Pedestrian hit on both sides of Capital Beltway

WASHINGTON — A 28-year-old male pedestrian attempted to cross all lanes of
the Inner Loop of the Interstate 495 Capital Beltway when he was struck by a
vehicle Friday night in the area between the Georgia Avenue and Colesville
Road exits.

Police say he then continued to run and jump over the concrete barriers in
the center median of the highway when he was then struck possibly a second
time as he attempted to run across the I-495 Outer Loop lanes.

Maryland State Police is conducting an investigation of the accident, which
occurred
around 8:20 p.m. The pedestrian has been identified as Michael John Kaufman,
Jr. of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded and assisted with the accident
scene.
Kaufman was then transported to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda where he is
listed with having serious, non life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Dodge that first hit Kaufman has been identified as Shayla
Pair of Landover Hills, Maryland.

The Inner Loop closed for one hour as the Maryland State Police investigated
the scene as well as a multiple vehicle accident. Maryland State Police say
the investigation is ongoing and ask anyone who may have witnessed the
incident to call the MSP Rockville Barracks at 301-424-2101.
