No. 19 Clemson upgrades QB’s status to doubtful

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson has upgraded injured quarterback Deshaun Watson’s status to “doubtful” for its game with Wake Forest.

At the start of the 19th-ranked Tigers bye week, Watson was listed as “out” for Thursday night’s contest against the Demon Deacons with a broken bone in his throwing hand. The school’s updated injury list was released Monday.

Clemson (6-2, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) is seeking its sixth straight victory.

Offensive coordinator Chad Morris said last week Watson had begun throwing a football at workouts.

Coach Dabo Swinney said Watson was making good progress recovering from his injury, which came early in a 23-17 victory over Louisville. Swinney said last week while there was a chance Watson could play at Wake Forest, it was more likely he’d return against Georgia Tech on Nov. 15.
