Johnson leads N. Iowa past Illinois St, 42-28

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — David Johnson ran for 129 yards and two scores, added a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and become Northern Iowa’s career rushing leader to help the Panthers snap Illinois State’s nine-game win streak with a 42-28 victory on Saturday.

Johnson, who has 4,051 yards rushing in his career at Northern Iowa (5-4, 3-2 Missouri Valley), moved past Corey Lewis, who ran for 4,003 yards from 2005-2008.

Illinois State’s Marshaun Coprich, who finished with 166 yards rushing and three touchdowns, tied it at 21 with a 76-yard scoring run with 9 minutes remaining, but Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a score before adding an 18-yard touchdown run to make it 35-21 with 4:12 to play.

Tre Roberson’s 21-yard touchdown pass to James O’Shaughnessy pulled Illinois State (7-1, 4-1) within a score about 2 minutes later.

Northern Iowa went three-and-out, but Tim Kilfoy returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown with 50 seconds left to seal it.
