LUXEMBOURG (AP) — Top-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany exited the Luxembourg Open in the first round on Tuesday, losing 6-4, 6-2 to Pauline Parmentier.
The 78th-ranked Frenchwoman posted her first victory on the main Tour over Petkovic after breaking her five times.
Having taken a 3-1 lead, Petkovic lost 11 of the next 14 games and Parmentier concluded with an ace.
Kirsten Flipkens, seeded seventh, also bowed out prematurely from the $250,000 hard court tournament, with the Belgian losing 7-6 (5), 6-1 to Johanna Larsson.
Second-seeded Alize Cornet of France reached the second round with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win over Czech qualifier Lucie Hradecka, who saved three match points at 5-4 then wasted two set points before her opponent finally sealed the match.
“I had a good first set, it was a bit more complicated in the second set,” Cornet said. “I got a bit tired, and Lucie started playing better (…), she had set points herself, so I’m really glad I could pull it off in straight sets.”
Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki of Germany, seeded third, advanced with a 7-5, 6-0 win against Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.
