No. 2 Cornet & No. 3 Lisicki lose at Luxembourg

LUXEMBOURG (AP) — Second-seeded Alize Cornet of France and third-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany bowed out of the second round of the Luxembourg Open on Wednesday, All the top three seeded players are now out of the tournament after Cornet lost 6-2, 6-3 to Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands and Lisicki was beaten 7-5, 6-2 by Czech qualifier Denisa Allertova. Top-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany lost on Tuesday.

Cornet, ranked 21st, had eight double-faults and dropped serve six times to exit the tournament.

Although Lisicki had four aces, compared to none for her opponent, she dropped serve six times in a patchy performance.

The 73rd-ranked Bertens will next face Mona Barthel of Germany in the quarterfinals, after she powered past No. 8 Monica Niculescu of Romania 0-6, 7-5. 6-3.

However, fourth-seeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic and No. 5 Varvara Lepchenko of the United States did advance to the last eight.

Zahlavova Strycova won 6-4, 7-6 (1) against Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck in a match featuring 11 service breaks, while Lepchenko saved all eight break points she faced in a 6-2, 6-2 win against Slovakia’s Jana Cepelova.

Zahlavova Strycova next plays qualifier Johanna Larsson of Sweden, who rallied past Polona Hercog of Slovenia 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-1, while Lepchenko’s quarterfinal opponent is Allertova.

Sixth-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy also went out after losing 7-5, 6-0 against Annika Beck of Germany, who broke her serve seven times.

Beck next plays Austria’s Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, who won 6-1, 7-5 against France’s Pauline Parmentier.
