ENNIS, Texas (AP) — Tony Schumacher raced to his second Top Fuel victory in two days at Texas Motorplex, taking the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals Sunday.
Courtney Force topped the Funny Car field, Dave Connolly won in Pro Stock, and Andrew Hines in Pro Stock Motorcycle in the second of six playoff events in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.
Schumacher, the winner of the rain-delayed North Carolina event Saturday, beat J.R. Todd in the final for his 76th career Top Fuel win. Schumacher had a run of 3.891 seconds at 318.62 mph.
Schumacher opened a 106-point lead over second-place Steve Torrence in the standings.
“It’s an unbelievable situation,” Schumacher said. “We’ve won two races in less than 24 hours. My family drove up, I won a race, we went to dinner, went to bed, came back, and won another race in under 24 hours. We have a 100-point leading going into two more back-to-back races. It’s brutal pressure. Going into this with this much momentum places that pressure on other people. Some will be able to handle it. Some won’t.”
In the Funny Car final, Force raced to her third victory of the season, beating Del Worsham in the final. Force powered her Ford Mustang Funny Car to 4.227 at 301.07.
In Pro Stock, Connolly topped Gray Motorsports teammate Shane Gray with a 6.616 at 210.05.
Hines secured his fifth Pro Stock Motorcycle win of the season when Steve Johnson was unable to make the final because of mechanical issues. Hines had a 7.571 at 186.54.
