Late pick key as Monmouth (NJ) beats Wagner 21-16

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) — Mike Basile intercepted a pass in the end zone with less than two minutes to play as Monmouth made a late touchdown stand up for a 21-16 defeat of Wagner on Saturday.

The Hawks, (2-0) had taken a 21-9 lead early in the fourth quarter when Kwabena Asante ran from the 13 to cap an 80-yard drive. Monmouth then survived a Wagner touchdown pass and a lost fumble until Basile’s interception.

Asante rushed for 81 yards and Brandon Hill completed 20 of 33 passes for 215 yards with TD strikes to Asante and Hakeem Valles.

Brian Gehring hit Lloyd Smith with a 30-yard pass as Wagner (1-2) came to within 21-16 with 8:24 to play. Monmouth was facing fourth-and-9 in its own territory and fumbled a fake punt. Najee Harris recovered for Wagner at the 26 and the Seahawks drove to the 12 before Gehring was intercepted in the end zone.
